Break Free

What, for you, is particularly meaningful about this song?

Pachi: Break Free is one of our more energetically powerful pieces. I love the energy and emotive expression of the track. The lyrics are inspired by Bono’s style of ‘fire and tempest’, on the theme of sole searching, passion, desire – an inner quest of a spiritual nature.

Pachi: The subject of the song is in the spirit of The Animals’s ‘We gotta get out of this place’. It portrays a distinction between an outer and inner experience. A feeling of being imprisoned from within the observation of one's own experience. Outside is buzzing with activity and interaction, but inside . . . there is a sense of disconnection to that, a sense of numb isolation, starved of motivation and purpose. Hence the video imagery of a skeleton looking out from inside its own rib cage. I have a sense, in these digital times, how this scenario is becoming more and more relatable. So the visuals are an emotive exploration of that.

Pachi: After the epic journey of the Nuclear Sun animation, I wanted to create something that was a little more realistic in terms of the amount of time to produce it. I just followed a creative journey of experimentation. I wanted the visual impact to match the instrumental energy of the piece. The footage was all filmed locally around Sydney on an iPhone 5s. There’s some Blender animation featuring my favourite character – Memento Mori – all pulled together into a visually chaotic storyline through Premiere Pro. And that’s pretty much it.
